Why you need independent engineering supervision on your project

What the supervising engineer does on site, why finding a defect before it is covered and finished saves a great deal of cost, and how to follow the reports.

Execution on site is the stage at which drawings turn into a building, and it is also the stage at which most costly mistakes appear. Independent engineering supervision gives you a professional eye that follows the works on your behalf.

What does the supervising engineer do? They review the works at each stage and compare them with the drawings and specifications, approve materials before they are used, record remarks and follow them up with the contractor, and write reports that remain a reference for you.

Why before covering? Much of the work is covered by plaster, floors or finishes and then becomes hard to inspect. Finding a defect early costs far less than correcting it after finishing, so these works are reviewed and documented before they disappear behind the finishing layers.

Why independent? When the supervisor is accountable to you rather than to the contractor, their remarks favour the quality of the project and its conformity with the contract and specifications.

It is good to agree in the contract on the number of visits and the form of the reports, and to ask for a copy of the remarks and what was done about them. This is general information for awareness and is not a substitute for a specialist engineer who studies your project.
